That Classic Song
Although works like Handel's "Messiah" and Vivaldi's "The Four Seasons" are fraught with timeless majesty, your classic song doesn't necessarily need to be derived from classical music or it's classical period, for that matter. Your classic can simply be an old school song that maybe your parents listened to while you were growing up that takes you back to a place of innocence. For example, Stevie Wonder's "As", Elvis' "Blue Suede Shoes" or the Beatles' "I Want to Hold Your Hand." Or even the triumphant "Theme from Star Wars", here being conducted by composer extraordinaire John Willams, himself, for the Boston Pops:
Doesn't it still make you want to stand up and cheer?
The Love Song
This could be the song you want played at your wedding or the first song you and the love of your life ever danced to. This song may well define romantic love for you or maybe it's a song to your child. I always felt that Fleetwood Mac's "Songbird" would fit a parent-child relationship as well as a romantic one. The same may be said of the Stone's classic, "Wild Horses", here being performed by Adam Levine and Alicia Keys. Breathtaking.
The Break Up Song
Of course, the yin and the yang of relationships portends that sometimes relationships end. And,often, not well. For this reason, we have been gifted by the music gods with Adele. And, for the guys, you can take heart in more manly variations of this theme in songs such as "Gypsy Faded" by Joseph Arthur
or Ray LaMontagne's "Jolene".
The Dance Song
This is the song you can't sit still to! This one makes you want to get up and dance. It could be your favorite Marc Anthony Salsa song, a Hip Hop Classic, a Hindi dance song or even recent hit: "Danza Kuduro" by Don Omar.
It doesn't really matter; this song just makes you want to move. It is your epiphany that dancing is the greatest expression of joy that music engenders.
Birds singing, the wind whistling, howls hooting, horses neighing, a tree swaying, all these sounds remind you of the music of everyday, simple beauty and how it proves restorative. Also, certain sounds such as ocean waves lightly crashing into sand and then receding serve a meditative purpose that allows us to return harmony and calm to our mind and body.
The Song Within
This is your song, the one that only you can sing. It is unique and resides in your soul. Without you, this song would not exist so it should be treasured. Try to listen to it everyday. No matter what happens, it will remind you that you are still you and that is a blessing, just like music.
